Call led a beleaguered campaign against the Seminoles occupying the Cove of the Withlacoochee. The offensive culminated in the Battle of the Wahoo Swamp (Nov. 18th-21st) marking the last major battle in the Withlacoochee theater. Recently, the Gulf Archaeology Research Institute conducted a National Park Service ABPP grant funded project to examine the history and archaeology of the Battle of Wahoo Swamp. This projected combined archaeological methods with insight from local historians to assess the layout of the battlefield. GARI staff will discuss the history of Call’s campaign and the results of the archaeological fieldwork of the campaign’s final engagement. Sean Norman is Acting Director of GARI. He specializes in the geoarchaeology of coupled human-natural ecosystems in coastal environments. He received an M.A. in Applied Anthropology from the University of South Florida (USF) where he examined the relationship between landscape modification (midden deposition and mound construction) and changing sea level and climatic conditions. This was accomplished through the use of soil coring and landscape modeling using geographic information systems (GIS) software. This led to his interest in refining regional sea level reconstructions. He also possesses a graduate certificate in GIS from USF and a B.A. in History from Columbus State University.
